True story.
Back when I was a teenager, I worked at McDonald's, as so many of us did. I was on break one morning, with two other guys about my age. One was the stereotypical punk; mohawk, safety pins affixing bands I'd never heard of to an artfully torn and mended hoodie. The other was Chad. Chad was built like a linebacker, funny, and a genuinely fun guy to hang out with. The name isn't a euphemism.
Punky says, "Man, what the world really needs is anarchy. This system sucks, man, anarchy, that's the answer."
Chad watched him calmly through the shared cigarette smoke, listening to this go on.
Then, in a flash, he stood, taking Punky by the throat, out of his chair, pinning him to the wall. With the other hand, he reached into Punky's back pocket, took out his wallet, and showed it to him. He said, "I'm bigger than you. I'm stronger than you. I want your wallet, so I'm taking it. This is anarchy. How do you like it?"
He let the point linger, then released Punky, handed him back his wallet, and sat back down.
So long as I live, I'll never forget that moment, watching in real time as the real decisions a young man made dawned on him.
